Living In The Past
Twice this week, I was told, ” Well that was the past.” So I started to think, when do we let go of the past or does it always stay with us as a ghost of a promise, setback, victory, or our former selves? So “Let me Explain” like my man Kevin Hart says. To start, a friend of mine stood me up for a lunch date and when he asked me to lunch again I said, well last time we tried for that you stood me up and his response was, “Stop living in the past.”
The second incident that week occurred when I was texting something a bit sensitive to my friend and he just left me hanging. When he wrote me back the next day like nothing happened and I said, “hey, thanks for leaving me hanging.” and his immediate response was, “That’s the past.” Two times in one week I heard the same statement from two different people. So is it me..am I living in the past instead of the present. Very often we hear phrases like, Live for Now, or Live today like it will be your last but we may still find ourselves worrying about what we did yesterday, or what we need to do next week. If we are constantly worrying about life in the past or future, when do we have time to enjoy the now. So here is what I decided. I am definitely a work in progress. Trying everyday to enjoy the moment. I also believe that I don’t live in the past, but instead I learn from it. For example if something or someone hurt me I remember it quite vividly and yes I may move on but I try to take lessons from those past experiences so that I can create a better me. The past, although not a current event, is still an important one. While we must not sweat the small stuff of our past, we should always be vigilant and mindful of how the past can effect our present and future. Do you agree?
